2025 Corporate Wellness Challenges
Evidence-Based Strategies for Employee Well-being
It's likely that you know a loved one that isn't in good health. This even after all the latest tools, solutions, and efforts being made by friends, family, and employers to nudge an individual into better health. As a society, we are witnessing limited success in helping our population commit to a healthier lifestyle. And the numbers don't lie.
New CDC population data from 2023 show that in 23 states, more than one in three adults (35%) has obesity. Before 2013, no state had an adult obesity prevalence at or above 35%. Currently, at least one in five adults (20%) in each U.S. state is living with obesity. Other countries like Portugal is calculating an obesity prevalence lower than the regional average (25.3% for women and 24.9% for men). Thus cultural lifestyle can't be dismissed. But the playbook to reversing obesity hasn't changed. These include:
- A Healthy Diet
- Consistent Exercise
- Environmental Factors
- Understanding our Genetics
A recent study analyzing two decades of nutritional data reveals a modest improvement in American dietary habits, but experts say there's still significant room for progress. According to Dr. Dariush Mozaffarian, director of the Food is Medicine Institute at Tufts University, the nation's dietary grade has moved from an F to a D - a small step forward that masks concerning underlying trends.
The Good News
Between 1999 and 2020, the percentage of Americans following poor dietary patterns decreased from 49% to 37% - an 11.4% improvement. This shift suggests that public health messages about nutrition are starting to resonate with some segments of the population. But then the Covid pandemic hit and people were asked to shelter. Sheltering changed habits. Services like Netflix soared and exercise dropped and as a population in whole, food consumption increased. But now things are shifting again.
We are all watching what we eat, and many of our food producers are making a real effort to reduce the amount of foreign chemicals added. As a result, there are improvements. Some of these improvements include:
Positive Changes:
- The percentage of Americans eating a poor diet decreased from 49% to 37% between 1999-2020
- Some companies and restaurants are starting to make healthier products
- Americans are beginning to understand messages about nutrition better
- There's increased awareness about the dangers of sugary sodas
However, there is significant limitations to this progress:
- The improvements mostly happened between 1999-2010, with little advancement since then
- Fruit and vegetable consumption hasn't increased at all over the 20-year period
- Only 1.58% of Americans have what would be considered an ideal diet
Many improvements are uneven across demographics:
- Better progress among: women, younger adults, Hispanic adults, and those with higher education/income
- Less progress among: men, Black adults, older adults, and those with lower income/education
The Bad News
Systemic issues remain, including:
- Widespread availability of ultra processed foods
- High levels of refined grains in products (about 35% of calories)
- Continued presence of added sugars
- Food insecurity affecting access to healthy options
- Cost barriers making healthier foods less accessible
- Genetics does play a key role in our ability to process foods
There are new methods that are showing progress. The 2024 Stanford Workplace Study revealed that employees who take structured 5-minute breaks every hour demonstrate 18% better focus and 23% lower stress levels compared to those who work continuously.
What You Can Do:
- Institute company-wide "movement moments" using calendar integration

Wellness Challenges in 2025
Start a Wellness Challenges Program
This year, you may want to consider relooking at a wellness challenges program. Wellness challenge programs provide significant value by motivating individuals to adopt healthier habits through interactive features like tracking progress, setting goals, participating in team challenges, and offering rewards, ultimately leading to improved physical and mental well-being, increased employee engagement, and potential cost savings for employers by reducing healthcare claims.
Healthtek's Wellness Challenges integrate wearable devices and offer rewards for participation, using enhanced engagement techniques and more. These wellness challenges can effectively motivate change, and even small changes can make a significant difference in overall health.
As we progress through 2025, wellness programs are increasingly becoming a strategic imperative rather than a nice-to-have benefit. Organizations that successfully implement these challenges typically see:
- 24% reduction in healthcare costs
- 31% improvement in employee satisfaction
- 28% decrease in turnover rates
- 22% increase in productivity
Remember, the key to success lies not in the challenges themselves, but in creating a corporate culture that genuinely values and prioritizes employee well-being. Start small, measure consistently, and adjust based on employee feedback.
Let's face it, we all need to be healthier and Healthtek is here to offer the first step towards this mission.
